Episode 3: When you realize it is time to STOP overreacting

The house was a mess. Toys, shoes, backpacks – they were EVERYwhere and I was SO angry about it. My house was beyond disorganized and I just couldn’t take another minute of it!

I ripped through the front room, scooping up my kids’ stuff and launching it out the front door into the yard. It was not my most stellar parenting moment.

The real kicker is that I KNEW I was overreacting. Yes, my darling children had been lazy about tidying up their belongings, but did it warrant this kind of reaction? Probably not, but once I started, I could not figure out HOW TO STOP OVERREACTING!

Episode Scripture

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

1 Corinthians 10:13 English Standard Version

Repentance doesn’t just mean apologizing every time you screw up and then overcompensating by acting really nice towards the person you wronged. It means hating your sin and consciously making the effort to turn away from it.

True repentance can only come after the conviction of sin by the Holy Spirit. It doesn’t mean you will never mess up again, but repentance will show the fruit of genuine changes and improvement in both demeanor and behavior over time.

Big Picture Take Away

You know you need to stop overreacting, but what does this look like practically?

  1. Praying that God will help you see triggers before they set you off.
  2. Asking for wisdom on when to remove yourself from situations that have the potential to make you overreact.
  3. And when you lose your cool anyway, there is a quick confession and asking for forgiveness withOUT pointing fingers and who or what caused you to overreact.

But be careful! This is not just about your actions, it is about your heart! (I talk about this danger in Ep 2: How to be a Proverbs 31 Woman withOUT being perfect!)
