You may know the stories of Elizabeth and Hannah pretty well. Both of these women felt heartache because they were unable to bear children and both believed that God was their only hope to conceive. Both women had to endure their circumstances, BUT how they endured and exactly what they endured looked different for each of them.
It’s not hard, when reading the accounts of these women, to imagine they had two very different personality types. While Elizabeth appears more reserved, Hannah expresses herself more openly.
What is most important is to understand that, in both cases, God saw each woman in the midst of her hardship and cultivated endurance.

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.Hebrews 4:15-16 English Standard Version
My heart rejoices in the Lord! The Lord has made me strong. Now I have an answer for my enemies; I rejoice because you rescued me. No one is holy like the Lord! There is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.1 Samuel 2:1-2 New International Version
Big Picture Take Away
You may be suffering through a trial right now and have no idea if God will change your circumstances. In fact, you might think that He can’t change your circumstances, but that is never the case. God is always at work, even when you can’t see it and it may be years and years before you understand the plans He has for you. During this time of waiting, of enduring, you must do what both Elizabeth and Hannah did – trust that, not only will God act on your behalf, He wil do so in His perfect timing.
You can do more than just be comforted that Jesus understands your struggles because He was human like you, but you can draw on His strength to overcome them. You can approach the throne of grace with confidence that He WILL help you in your time of need.
But, you do need to approach Him. You do need to ask for His help.
Maybe you have been praying that God changes the people or circumstances around you so that you don’t have to suffer anymore. But studying God’s word is like looking in a mirror and seeing the truth about yourself that you can’t see on your own. It isn’t until you accept that God is using your complicated and painful situation to change you into a woman that loves God above all else that you will finally gain a God-perspective of your circumstances.
You can be certain that however and whenever God chooses to act will be for your good and for His glory. In the meantime, pray for His strength to endure each day and know that He hears you.
